CHARLESTON, S.C. (Feb. 3, 2015) - The Virginia NPL, one of two new NPLs in the 2014-15 season, hosted its first Player Development Program (PDP) event at River City Sportsplex, just outside Richmond, Jan. 31. The event targeted top area boys born in 2002 and girls born in 2001.

A total of 56 players from 13 different clubs in Virginia were identified and developed. In the morning, players engaged in dynamic warm-up sessions, technical passing exercises, possession drills and small-sided games. The afternoon concluded with 11 vs. 11 games.

The following coaches led the event: Aaron Bruner (Richmond United), Matt Lawrey (Richmond Strikers), Pat McStay (Chesterfield United), Matt Mittelstaedt (Virginia Rush), Celia Mosier (Richmond Strikers) and Quan Phan (Prince William Courage).

U.S. Soccer technical advisor and former U.S. U-17 Men’s National Team assistant coach Clint Peay observed the PDP for potential national team camp invitations, while US Club Soccer representatives evaluated players for possible id² Training Camp invitations.

Eleven of the 18 players selected for the id² National Selection team traveling to Argentina later this month, 11 players were scouted at PDP events.

McStay, also the Virginia NPL administrator, created a video montage of this PDP.

“The Virginia NPL has completely embraced the NPL experience,” NPL General Manager Leo Garcia said. “This PDP is just another example of the league helping to put players first and better the Virginia soccer landscape as a whole.”
