MANHEIM, Pa. (June 9, 2011) – Albertson SC (U-13), New York Red Bulls (U-14) and NJSA 04 (U-15) each claimed titles as the 2011 Northeast Pre-Academy League Cup came to a close. Held in conjunction with the US Club Soccer Player Development Program (PDP), the event took place June 3-5 at PA Classics Soccer Park in Manheim, Pa.
Albertson SC entered the League Cup as the No. 4 seed but reached the final by shutting out top-seeded PDA 3-0. In the final, Albertson defeated seventh-seeded Match Fit Chelsea 4-1 to earn the title.
In U-14 action, the top-ranked New York Red Bulls never surrendered a goal en route to the championship, out-scoring their opponents by a combined score of 16-0.
NJSA 04, which entered the weekend as the No. 3 seed, claimed the U-15 crown on the strength of three one-goal victories. This included a 2-1 win over No. 2 seed FC Greater Boston in the semifinal and a 1-0 victory over the fifth-seeded PDA in the championship match.
In addition, 44 players in the U-12 age group took part in the inaugural US Club Soccer Player Development Program-Northeast Pre-Academy League event on Saturday and Sunday. Recommended by their club’s DOC, the players were divided into four teams and each played a total of two 60-minute, 8v8 games during the event.
U.S. Soccer U-14 Boys National Team Head Coach Manny Schellscheidt and Technical Advisor Mike Dickey were in attendance to scout and speak with the players. Leading the staff at the event was Gerry McKeown, id2 Boys’ Program Director.
“This program is a great opportunity for talented young players to come together and further their development by having the chance to play against each other,” said Schellscheidt. “Other countries are able to fully develop their young players so it’s important that we not miss any of our top young players and the more chances we have to identify them at events like this, the more we can close that gap.”
Entering its third full season in 2011-12, an expanded Northeast Pre-Academy League will become part of US Club Soccer’s National Premier Leagues (NPL), which are the highest of US Club Soccer’s competitive platforms.
Since its founding in 2009, the Northeast Pre-Academy League has grown from 12 clubs in its inaugural season to 18 clubs for the 2011-12 season. The league has also expanded from two age groups back in its first year to U-12 through U-15 boys’ age groups in 2011-12. Each member club, of which all are members of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, will take part in the U-14 and U-15 age groups, while most will take part in the U-12 and U-13 age groups.
Northeast Pre-Academy League champions in the U-13 through U-15 age groups will be crowned in a postseason tournament in which eight qualifying teams in each age group will compete. From there, Northeast Pre-Academy League champions will advance to the inaugural National Premier Leagues Champions Cup in July 2012.
