PDPs tie into the id² Program seamlessly, as it allows players the opportunity to train in their local area and be scouted through US Club Soccer’s own scouting efforts and its network of scouts. For the id² Program cycle targeting boys born in 2001, there were a total of 12 PDPs and four id² Training Camps.
Gerry McKeown, id2 Boys Program Director and head coach of the id2 National Selection, was on-site to scout some of the PDPs and consulted with hosting coaches about the others.
“The PDPs have been a great vehicle for selection, because we’re seeing guys in an environment that is above the average club game,” McKeown said. “It’s similar to id² in that it’s kind of a tryout format, and they’re under some pressure that they apply to themselves.”
“When you get a lot of the better players together,” McKeown added, “it’s always a good opportunity to see what these guys are made of.”
id² National Selection will play a competitive slate of games against top Argentinian youth academy teams. The match schedule is currently being finalized and will be made available online soon.
In addition to competing against elite South American teams, the id² National Selection will be immersed in a multi-faceted experience on- and-off-the-field that also includes watching professional games and training in some of the country’s best facilities.
The group will arrive in Houston on Feb. 28 for a brief domestic base camp before flying to Argentina the evening of March 1. The id² National Selection squad returns to American soil on March 11.
