CHARLESTON, S.C. (Dec. 18, 2017) – The Virginia NPL – one of 21 member NPLs competing in the National Premier Leagues (NPL) during the 2017-18 season – has announced its hiring of a new league administrator: Oliver Weiss.
Weiss brings nearly 30 years of professional experience to the Virginia NPL front office, beginning as a youth coach in 1988 (to 2002) and progressing through public school teaching (1993-99), collegiate coaching (1995-2009), U.S. Development Academy director (2010-13) and other directing roles in youth soccer organizations since the D.A.
Prior to his youth soccer coaching and management roles, Weiss played soccer in Germany as a youth athlete and went on to play collegiately for the University of Richmond.
“Over the past year, we have evaluated how Virginia NPL can better support its member clubs and families,” said Mike Cullina, President of the Virginia NPL. “Our goal is to provide meaningful matches and a professional gameday experience by raising standards of our member clubs, improving our communications and considering new platforms for our student-athletes to develop and gain exposure.
"Bringing in a full-time administrator was the logical next step for the league, and the opportunity to hire someone with Oliver’s experience and knowledge of the game is fantastic.”
The Virginia NPL entered the nationwide NPL landscape ahead of the 2014-15 season, featuring 11-U through 19-U boys and girls age groups. The league currently includes a dozen clubs.
“I am excited to be working with the Virginia NPL and US Club Soccer,” Weiss said. “We hope to grow the game in this region by increasing league services to players, coaches, parents and clubs alike.”
