CHARLESTON, S.C. (March 20, 2018) – The NPL’s newest member league of the West region, NPL West, officially kicked off their inaugural season this past weekend. The league’s four age groups, 14-U through 17-U boys age groups, got the NPL West play with 16 total matches on Sunday.
All eight member clubs - Albion SC, Arsenal, FC Golden State, Irvine Strikers, LA Galaxy, Pateadores, Real So Cal and Surf - registered their first matches and will hope to either build off their early momentum, or look for a quick turnaround in next Sunday’s games.
The 14-U boys saw no draws in their first week of play, meaning four clubs are currently tied at the top of the table, while the 15-U group played to three draws. FC Golden State currently leads that table after recording a 3-0 win over Real So Cal Rosas. The 16-U and 17-U divisions also had zero draws, with 17-U clubs Albion SC, FC Golden State and Strikers FC each registering 3-1 victories.
"At Surf, we always aim to provide the best possible competition to our players to maximize their development and the quality of their experience," said Evan Fuhs, Surf NPL Director. "We were very excited about the competitive level and league format that the NPL offers us, and it was fantastic to see that come alive during the opening weekend."
“Many top clubs have chosen to join this new NPL in Southern California to help bridge the gap between academy and club soccer by providing a consistent, competitive season throughout the spring,” said Jon Szczuka, Pateadores Senior Director of Coaching. “We are looking forward to exposing our players to further professional programming similar to what is provided within the USDA. Our ENPL program will be connected directly to our Pateadores Academy Program."
NPL West play will continue through May 20, before the clubs will prepare for their respective postseason paths. The teams that earn qualification (first and second places for each age group) through their regular season performances will compete in the ENPL Playoffs in June.
